Highway 395 Reopens into Mammoth Lakes Following 48-Hour Closure

Highway 395 in Mono County began receiving heavy snowfall on Christmas Day, closing the only roadway into Mammoth. Following two days of hard work to clear the roads from CalTrans, the road has reopened from Bishop to Mammoth Lakes. The stretch of Highway 395 from State Route 203 to State Route 182 remains closed.

Plow workers experienced extreme winter conditions for the past 48 hours as they worked to clear multiple feet of snow in intense wind. With a needed lifeline to the Mammoth Lakes community, California Highway Patrol began providing pilot cars for vehicles traveling through the storm on Highway 395. On Monday night, the pilot cars were removed and travelers were able to travel once again. Unfortunately, there is no timetable for the reopening of the rest of the highway.

Nearby Mammoth Mountain received 94 inches of snow over the past week, which was somewhat light compared to the 10 feet that fell on the north side of Lake Tahoe. Mammoth Lake locals spent the past two days digging out cars and homes as they dealt with the massive snowfall crippling the Sierra.

It’s been quite a storm to start the winter in the Sierra. Tomorrow could be one heck of a powder day. Yeehaw!
