Mandatory Evacuations Extend to Nevada’s Kingsbury Grade, Zephyr Cove Due to Caldor Fire

Mandatory evacuations for the Caldor Fire have now been extended into the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe, covering Highway 50 all the way to Zephyr Cove and up Kingsbury Grade. The casinos in Stateline are currently exempt from this order.

The Douglas County Sheriff has issued their first Evacuation Order in Nevada, pushing the evacuation zone further east as the Caldor Fire continues its movement. In California, thousands remain evacuated throughout the Sierra, including the residents of Meyers and South Lake Tahoe, who sit and watch as the flames move closer to neighborhoods.

This afternoon, law enforcement announced that no significant structure loss occurred in Meyers or South Lake Tahoe. Firefighters have worked tirelessly to keep the flames south of homes, mostly moving along the Carson mountains.

While the winds are a major cause for concern, firefighters have two advantages while fighting the fire in the urban areas surrounding South Lake Tahoe that they typically don’t have in more forested regions. There is significant road access to the fire, allowing firefighters to track the flames quickly and reposition as the winds move throughout the day. They also have significant access to water, which is actually a rare advantage in these heavy wildfire situations.

Meyers and South Lake Tahoe remain on mandatory evacuation. Here are the updated evacuation orders in Nevada from the Douglas County Sheriff:

The following affected communities in Douglas County, Nevada (excluding Stateline Casinos) are
• Upper Kingsbury (South)
• Upper Kingsbury (North)
• Central Kingsbury
• Lower Kingsbury
• Round Hill region and roads including Lower Elks Point
• Lake Village
• Lower Olivers, Kahle Drive region and roads

These Evacuation Orders will include areas from Highway 50 at Lake Parkway, East to Elks Point Road (excluding Stateline Casinos) and State Route 207 (Kingsbury Grade) from Highway 50 to Tramway Drive, including all area roads North and South of Kingsbury Grade.

Nevada Department of Transportation – Road Closures:
The following are soft road closures, meaning the roads are open to residents and employees who must enter the area to access their home or work.
• US 50 going west bound (into the Tahoe Basin) at Spooner Jct. (S. Carson St & 50)
• SR 207 west bound at Foothill Rd (intersection at the bottom of Kingsbury Grade)
• SR 28 and US 50 Jct. West Bound on 50

Safety Message: Have a transportation plan for animals and livestock. Think about fuel, medications, keepsakes, documents and groceries you might need. Think about your loved ones on oxygen or anyone who may need assistance leaving their home. Living with Fire has a Wildfire Evacuation Checklist for reference.
