Meet Griff – The Viral Dancing Park Ranger from the Humboldt Redwoods State Park

When quarantine hit in March of 2020, State and National Park throughout California were forced to close their gates to visitors. Not only did this mean that we couldn’t physically visit the beautiful outdoor areas of NorCal, but park rangers had no one to share their vast knowledge with.

With many of the usual park tours and learning programs still closed due to Covid, the Humboldt Redwoods State Park engaged their audience online with the most electric park ranger you’ve ever met.

John “Griff” Griffith is a Naturalist at the Humboldt Redwoods State Park and has been hosting live videos on their Facebook page throughout 2020 as a way to engage and educate people interested in the area. The on-location videos share fun and insightful thoughts from Griff, who has discussed everything from fire prevention to wildlife education. And he is one heck of a host.

Some of his live videos have entered “viral” territory, with this explanation of a mountain lion video receiving over half a million views:

So who the heck is Griff? Well if you’re saying to yourself “this guy should have his own tv show,” he actually did. He hosted Animal Planet’s first digital show Wild Jobs in 2018 educating people of the lives of conservation workers. See the trailer:

Griff has a history in Northern California, studying Natural Resource Interpretation at Humboldt State University. Oh, by the way, the man is known for his dancing, as seen in this viral video with 6 million views:

Thanks for all you do Griff!
