Multiple Avalanches Hit Mount Shasta After Heavy Snowfall

The heavy snowfall hitting Northern California mountains has been a wonderful sight to see after a mostly dry winter. But with large snow accumulation also comes avalanche danger in the mountains.

Today, a few small avalanches were observed by officials from the Mount Shasta Avalanche Center which shows the current danger of being in the mountains right now.

“This morning, a few small, dry loose avalanches above treeline off the W-NW facing aspect of Green Butte Ridge,” the avalanche center wrote on Instagram.

Meanwhile, avalanche danger in the Sierra near Tahoe remains high with multiple feet of new snow falling on the area over the past few days. Mount Shasta has seen three feet of new snow this week.

If you’re planning on adventuring into the mountains this weekend, please be safe. The Mount Shasta Avalanche Center recommends flotation devices for anyone hiking above the treeline.
