Potentially Record-Setting Heatwave Heading Towards Northern California
A rare heatwave is heading towards Northern California this week, which has prompted the National Weather Service to issue an excessive heat watch throughout the entire state. Many areas will experience triple digit heat and record setting temperatures are expected throughout the region.
The heat will build on Wednesday, June 16th and is expected to last through the weekend, with temperatures peaking on Thursday. Redding and Chico temperatures are expected to peak on Friday at 112 degrees, while Sacramento could reach 110 degrees. The heat will be felt immensely along the typically cooler Mendocino County, with Ukiah and Boonville both reaching 109 degrees.

PG&E has indicated it does not intend on shutting down power during the event, with wildfire risk not reaching its maximum potential quite yet. That being said, this type of heat can be dangerous for the elderly, children and pets. In fact, Sacramento is opening cooling center s for anyone in need during the event.
Here are some precautions you can take to stay safe during the heatwave:
- Drink extra water
- Avoid outdoor strenuous activities from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Help elderly, kids and pets stay cool
- Plan to be in air conditioned buildings
The heat is expected to subside on Monday, June 21.
