Redding Air Tanker Base Sets Record Amid Park Fire Battle
As the Park Fire continues to rage across Northern California, the Redding Air Tanker Base has set a new record for single-day retardant loading.
On July 27, 2024, the base supplied an astounding 569,957 gallons of retardant to combat the wildfire. This amounts to over 5 million pounds of fire retardant, a crucial element in the fight to control the blaze.
The pink color of the fire retardant is specifically chosen for visibility. Pilots flying the air tankers can easily spot the bright pink hue, ensuring precise drops over the fire’s flanks. The retardant works by slowing the spread of the fire, allowing ground crews to aggressively combat the flames and protect threatened areas.
The record-breaking efforts of the Redding Air Tanker Base highlight the intensity and scale of the firefighting operations. With over 6,500 personnel from across the country, including crews from Texas, the fight against the Park Fire is a testament to the dedication and coordination of firefighting teams.
The Park Fire, which began on July 24 at Upper Bidwell Park, has devastated vast areas in Butte and Tehama counties. Despite ongoing efforts by firefighting personnel, the fire has destroyed hundreds of homes and continues to threaten thousands more. As of the latest reports, the fire has burned over 414,042 acres and is currently 34% contained.
