The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning for fire risk in Northern California this weekend, and the warning turned out to be prophetic. A fire broke out in Yolo County on Saturday afternoon and has quickly grown to 1,800 acres, forcing evacuations in the area.

The Sand Fire, just outside of Guinda, continues to burn on the grassy hills as 500 firefighters have been deployed to contain it. With excessive heat and windy conditions, CalFire has announced no containment to date.

Evacuations have been announced in the rural area of the fire, with about 125 homes affected by the mandatory evacuations. An evacuation center has been set up at the Boy Scout Cabin in Esparto, 16980 Yolo Ave.

With the high fire danger in the area, PG&E has turned off the power to 16,000 customers in Butte and Yuba Counties, including the fire devastated Paradise. The company has warned NorCal residents that it will actively turn off power in fire-prone areas, with the hopes of avoiding the costly fires it has caused in the past.

Meanwhile, the West Butte Fire has grown to 1,000 acres in Sutter County near the Sutter Buttes.
