Lake Tahoe is known to have some epic homes, including the now world-famous $75 million mega-mansion with a hillside tram. There’s one home that stands above the rest, not for its extravagant accommodations (although it has them) and square footage (has that too), but for its Hollywood history as the set of one of the most popular television shows in the sixties.

Bonanza was a popular television show from 1959 through 1973

Bonanza captured the hearts and minds of Americans as a wildly popular TV show from 1959 through 1973. The show’s location was dubbed “Ponderosa Ranch,” which is fictional, but the sprawling location on Lake is as real as it gets. The lakefront home was recently sold for a whopping $38 million, the highest ever for a Tahoe home in Nevada. The owner will now be able to spend their days on Bonanza’s Ponderosa Ranch.

While Ponderosa Ranch was a simple establishment in the TV show, the modern-day property is quite extravagant. The 17,700-square-foot home features nine bedrooms, nine fireplaces, a home theater, a game room, and a full gym and sauna. It sits on a 24-acre plot on the east side of the lake, with the modern home being built in 2004.

The home was sold for a record price by Sierra Sotheby’s International Realty, who put it on the market for $59 million in 2016. While the final price was much lower, it still ranks as the most expensive on the Nevada side of lake. Here are a few highlights of the mansion:

  • 24-acre property
  • 9 bedrooms
  • 9 bathrooms
  • 9 fireplaces
  • Home theater
  • game room
  • Full gym and sauna
  • 15-stall horse stable
  • Private Lake Tahoe beach and dock
  • Wine cellar
  • 2 offices

Take all of the amenities above and mix it with the setting of one of America’s most popular TV shows, and $38 million sounds like a fair price. The site was also the location of the Bonanza theme park, which was shut down in 2004. Here’s a video outlining the property and history of the theme park:
