Celebrate National Public Lands Day with Volunteer Opportunities Across Northern California
National Public Lands Day (NPLD) is just around the corner, offering outdoor enthusiasts a chance to give back to public lands across the nation. Celebrated on Saturday, September 28, this year marks the 31st anniversary of NPLD, and there will be nearly 50 volunteer events taking place in California alone.
The day invites volunteers to participate in various activities, including trail maintenance, tree planting, beach clean-ups, and habitat restoration. It’s a family-friendly event where people of all ages can come together to help steward America’s natural resources.
Coordinated by the National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF), in partnership with federal agencies like the National Park Service and the USDA Forest Service, NPLD is the nation’s largest single-day volunteer effort benefiting public lands. Volunteers not only get a chance to preserve nature but also enjoy free entry to National Parks and other federal public lands.
Here are some highlighted volunteer opportunities in Northern California:
- Golden Gate National Recreation Area: Participate in habitat restoration, landscaping, and nursery work in San Francisco. Activities are scheduled from September 25-28.
- Shasta-Trinity National Forest (near Redding): Join efforts to clean up illegal dump sites at Post Mountain within the Hayfork Ranger District.
- Mono Basin Scenic Area: Help restore the garden at the Mono Basin Scenic Area Visitor Center and celebrate 40 years of conservation.
- Lake Sonoma Cleanup Day: Join the clean-up efforts at Lake Sonoma in Geyserville.
- Point Reyes National Seashore: Improve native habitats by removing invasive iceplant at North Beach.
