The fire season in Northern California appears to be starting early following a dismal winter. Typically, fires don’t burn significant areas until late in the summer. This year, wildfire has already burned its first iconic destination in NorCal in 2022.

On March 24, the iconic Pioneer Tree in Samuel P. Taylor State Park was burned to the ground in a 1/2 acre fire that closed much of the park and surrounding trails. The fire was quickly halted by the Marin County Fire Department, with no injuries reported and no evacuations needed.

The Pioneer Tree was the centerpiece of the popular Pioneer Tree Trail in Marin County, which included a 2.25-mile loop following the redwood-lined tributary of Lagunitas Creek. The tree was one of the last old growth redwoods in this second generation forest.

The trail is currently closed to the public, but other areas of the park remain open. Please check their website before visiting any areas within the Samuel P. Taylor State Park.
