Yosemite to Stay Closed Until Tuesday with Widespread Wind Damage

A boardwalk in the Mariposa Grove was damaged by a fallen ponderosa pine during the Mono wind event on January 19, 2021.

Following a disastrous wind event that toppled trees, destroyed cars and heavy equipment, and damaged infrastructure in Yosemite National Park, officials announce the park will remain closed until Tuesday.

“Yosemite National Park will remain closed at least until Tuesday, January 26, as a result of damage to park facilities caused by this week’s Mono wind event,” park officials said in a statement.

The restroom building in the Mariposa Grove was damaged by a tree during the Mono wind event on January 19, 2021.

When the park reopens, visitors will be able to enter the park using El Portal Road (Highway 140), Big Oak Flat Road (Highway 120 from the west), and Hetch Hetchy Road. Areas south of Yosemite Valley (including Badger Pass, Wawona, Mariposa Grove, South Entrance, and Wawona Road) will remain closed until further notice.

An incense-cedar fell through a house in Wawona during the Mono wind event on January 19, 2021.

The price of the damage has yet to be fully assessed, but photos show serious damage throughout the park. Boardwalks, houses and other infrastructures were found to be destroyed by falling trees. Many of the damage was done in the Mariposa Grove area of the park.

  1. I hope everything can go back to normal soon, and that nobody is hurt! It’s sad to see so many trees fall, but I guess it was their time.
Do you think this will be used as an opportunity to upgrade instead of just replace damaged infrastructure?
