A large redwood tree toppled over Highway 199 in Del Norte County on March 25, killing two Northern California residents hit in their car.

Just before noon on Thursday, a 36-year-old male driver and 45-year-old female passenger, both residents of Yreka, were driving southbound in a 2016 Honda Accord when the tree fell on top of them. The redwood was so big, it completely crushed the driver and passenger area of the car.

“The large tree fell directly on top of the 2016 Honda, completely crushing the passenger compartment,” said California Highway Patrol in a statement. “The driver and 45 year old passenger suffered fatal injuries as a result. This crash is still under investigation.”

The road was closed for almost two hours on Thursday while officials cleaned up the downed tree, with Highway 199 reopening afterwards.
