Burney Falls Is Launching a Reservation System This Summer to Tame the Crowds

If you’re planning a trip to McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park this summer, you’re going to need to plan ahead a little more than usual. California State Parks just announced a pilot reservation program that kicks in on weekends and holidays from May 15 through September 27.
The new system requires day-use reservations for Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and holiday visits during peak season. Weekdays from Monday through Thursday remain open without a reservation. Passes cost $10 per vehicle plus a small processing fee, and they come in three windows. There are 103 morning passes good from 8 a.m. to noon, 103 afternoon passes valid from 1 to 5 p.m., and 35 all-day passes for visitors who want to spend the full day at the park. Reservations are now live on the Burney Falls webpage.

A few things to know before you book. Each reservation covers one passenger vehicle and one standard parking spot, and same day reservations are not allowed. RVs, oversized vehicles, and trailers other than boat trailers are not permitted during the reservation period. Tour buses need a pre-approved permit. Senior, disabled, and annual pass holders still need to make a reservation, even though their entry discounts apply. Campers and cabin guests are automatically covered through their overnight booking.
The reason behind all of this is simple. Visitation has roughly doubled since 2015, and the park’s 1960s-era infrastructure has been buckling under the pressure. Long lines along SR-89, illegal parking, restroom backups, and trail damage have all become regular issues, and Burney Falls frequently has to close mid-day after hitting capacity.
