More Americans Than Ever Are Exploring the Outdoors, New Report Finds

The great outdoors has never been more popular. According to the Outdoor Industry Association (OIA), 2024 saw a record 181.1 million Americans, nearly 60 percent of the population over age six, participate in outdoor recreation. That marks a 3 percent increase from the previous year and continues a decade-long growth trend.

What’s driving the surge? OIA’s latest report points to broader participation across diverse groups. Young adults, seniors, high-income households, and Black and Hispanic communities all showed notable increases. Even households without college degrees saw more people embracing the outdoors.

The growth is being fueled by so-called “gateway activities” like hiking, biking, fishing, camping, and running. At the same time, committed outdoor enthusiasts are on the rise, with core participation jumping 5.7 percent, reversing years of decline.

Kids are also playing a key role. The study found that 66 percent of households with children are engaging in outdoor activities, with children’s high participation rates often encouraging parents to join in.

Not every trend was positive. Outdoor activity among White and Asian/Pacific Islander participants dipped slightly, and middle-aged adults saw lower numbers. The average person also took fewer trips outside compared to 2019, suggesting more casual participation overall.

Still, OIA sees the momentum as overwhelmingly positive, noting that “nearly every signal” points to long-term growth in outdoor recreation, good news for the industry, communities, and anyone who loves fresh air and open spaces.
