Seasonal Road Closures Take Effect Near McCloud Falls and Mount Shasta

The Shasta-Trinity National Forest has announced a seasonal area and road closure in the Mount Shasta and McCloud Ranger Districts, impacting access near McCloud Falls and the Mount Shasta Nordic Center.

The temporary closure is designed to improve public safety during the winter and early spring, when the area sees heavy use from hikers, snowshoers, and cross-country skiers. According to forest officials, drivers unfamiliar with winter conditions often attempt to access snow-covered Forest Service roads that are not maintained for winter travel, leading to stranded vehicles and difficult recoveries.

Motorized use has also created safety concerns. Off-highway vehicles and snowmobiles can leave deep tracks and ruts that freeze over, becoming hazardous obstacles for pedestrians. There is also an increased risk of collisions between vehicles and people recreating on foot.

To reduce these risks, primary roads accessing certain areas near McCloud Falls and the Mount Shasta Nordic Area will be closed to motorized vehicles from January 14 through May 1, 2026.

The order includes exemptions for permitted Forest Service users, snowmobiles using the designated Snowmobile Bypass within the Nordic Ski Closure Area, and emergency or law enforcement personnel performing official duties.

Violations may result in fines of up to $5,000 for individuals or $10,000 for organizations, and possible jail time.
