Chico’s Newest Startup Wants to Guide You Through Upper Bidwell Park

Upper Bidwell Park just got a little more accessible. A new Chico-based company is making it easier for visitors and newcomers to explore one of Northern California’s most underrated outdoor destinations through professionally guided hiking excursions.

Chico Beyond Adventure launched this year with a mission to open up the sprawling trail network of Upper Bidwell Park to people who might otherwise feel overwhelmed by it. The park’s sheer size and unmarked terrain can deter first-timers, and founder Jason Mandly saw that gap as an opportunity.

The company offers guided hikes across a range of difficulty levels, from casual walks to the Monkey Face formation to more demanding loops with sweeping views. Guides come prepared with extra water and gear for hikers who arrive underprepared, a thoughtful touch for a company catering largely to out-of-towners.

Excursions are planned year-round, with more frequent offerings scheduled around peak visitation windows like CSU Chico’s graduation week. Private group bookings are available for parties of eight or fewer.

Chico Beyond Adventure operates under a Special Use Permit through the City of Chico and has received formal approval from the Bidwell Park and Playground Commission, keeping tour groups small and the park’s natural character intact.

Bidwell Park draws visitors from across Northern California, and Mandly believes guided access is part of what will elevate Chico as a legitimate outdoor travel destination.
