Lassen Volcanic National Park Issues Closures Due to Dixie Fire

With the Dixie Fire growing into the Lassen National Forest and nearby Lake Almanor, the Lassen Volcanic National Park has issued closures throughout the park. As of Sunday, July 25, the area of Warner Valley and Juniper Lake are closed to all visitors. The park has also issued a closure for all backcountry cabin until further notice. Drakesbad Guest Ranch is also closed.

The announcement comes as Lassen officials believe that it’s not safe to go into the backcountry with the wildfire growing in the area. If the fire were to reach the areas of the park, search and rescue operations would by highly dangerous.

While other areas of the park remain open, the smoke of the fire has made air conditions horrendous in the park. You can see all air quality alerts here.

Here is the official closure from Lassen Volcanic NP:

  • The entire area of Lassen Volcanic National Park is closed to backcountry camping. This closure is to protect visitors and provide resource protection during high and extreme fire danger.
  • Warner Valley and Juniper Lake Areas are closed to all use. Warner Valley and Juniper Lake have a single one-way in and one-way out and would be difficult to evacuate during a fire or other emergency. The outlying nature of the campgrounds require delayed response time by emergency personnel. This closure is to protect visitors and provide resource protection during high and extreme fire danger.
  • Butte Lake Campground is closed to fires. This applies to wood fires, charcoal fires and any type of fire that leaves ash. Ignition sources that can be turned off and do not produce ash are permitted. This includes, but is not limited to gas stoves, lanterns, and generators. The closure begins at noon, Saturday, July 24, 2021.
