Northern California Town Named One of America’s Best Small Towns

Nevada City, a historic gem in the Northern California foothills, has been named one of the Top 10 Best Small Towns in the U.S. by Country Living magazine, thanks to its charming downtown, vibrant arts scene, and stunning natural surroundings.

Once a booming Gold Rush town, Nevada City’s downtown is a designated national historic landmark, preserving its 1800s-era character while embracing modern small-town charm. The town’s prime location near Tahoe National Forest and the South Yuba and American rivers offers visitors access to miles of scenic trails, swimming holes, and outdoor adventures.

Several beloved local businesses were highlighted in Country Living’s feature, including Kitkitdizzi gift shop, Heartwood Eatery, Three Forks Bakery & Brewing Co., the Nevada Theatre, and the National Exchange Hotel. The article also recommends a visit to the Firehouse No. 1 Museum for a deeper dive into the area’s rich history.

Adding to its appeal, the Nevada City Film Festival, dubbed the “Sundance of the Sierra”, returns June 20-22, 2025.

Nevada City joins other small towns across the U.S. on the list, including Sisters, Oregon; Rockport, Massachusetts; and Madison, Georgia.
