PG&E Announces High Whitewater Flows on the Pit River This Weekend
Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is set to offer another round of thrilling whitewater flows on the Pit 5 Reach of the Pit River in eastern Shasta County over the weekend of September 7-8. This stretch of the river is known for its challenging rapids, making it a prime spot for skilled paddlers seeking an adrenaline rush.
The Pit 5 Reach, a 9.3-mile portion of the river extending from PG&E’s Pit 5 Dam to the J.B. Black Powerhouse near Big Bend, features Class III, IV, and V rapids. These rapids are only suitable for experienced paddlers, and those planning to recreate in or near the river this weekend are urged to exercise extra caution. The area is not suitable for tubing.
The planned whitewater flows will see a significant increase in water levels. Flows will start at around 400 cubic feet per second (cfs) early Saturday morning and will gradually rise to 1,200 cfs before 10 a.m. These elevated flows will be maintained until about 4 p.m., after which they will be gradually reduced to 800 cfs. The same schedule will be repeated on Sunday, with flows returning to the normal 400 cfs after 4 p.m.
These high flows are part of PG&E’s license requirements for the Pit 3, 4, and 5 Hydroelectric Project and follow a similar event held on August 3-4. However, due to potential wildfire risks in the region, these dates are subject to change.
For those planning to take advantage of the high flows, it’s important to remember the potential dangers associated with swift water. Sudden immersion in cold water can lead to involuntary gasping, cardiac arrest, or drowning. Additionally, hidden obstacles beneath the water’s surface can be treacherous. Guided trips are recommended for those with less experience.
For your safety, remember that recreating in PG&E canals and flumes is strictly prohibited due to the significant dangers they pose.
Stay safe and enjoy the adventure!
