San Francisco Voters Opt to Close the Great Highway for Massive Oceanside Park

San Francisco voters have approved Proposition K, a plan to close a two-mile stretch of the Great Highway between Lincoln Way and Sloat Boulevard and convert it into a park.
The measure passed with 54% of the vote citywide, although many residents on the west side of the city opposed it, citing concerns about increased traffic.
Opponents worry that closing the Great Highway will push 14,000 vehicles onto neighborhood streets. However, supporters believe traffic can be managed by rerouting it to less-used roads and emphasize the importance of including residents in the planning process moving forward.
“Whether you voted for or against Prop K, this coast is yours, and the park will be yours,” said Lucas Lux from the Yes on K campaign. “Now that we know we will have a coastal park, we can start inviting everyone to discuss what improvements they want to see.”
The city’s supervisor for the Sunset District, Joel Engardio, expressed a commitment to collaborating with both supporters and opponents to address traffic concerns and ensure the park benefits the community. “If we can get cars where they need to go, we can also have an amazing park that’s good for the environment, local business, and generations to come,” said Engardio.
The city has six months to initiate the state and environmental approvals needed to begin the transformation, with plans for short-term amenities and long-term community input on the park’s design.
