This Lake Is Yosemite’s High Country Gem and Most People Have Never Heard of It

Most visitors to Yosemite National Park spend their time in the valley, and for good reason. But if you are willing to drive a little higher, one of the park’s most stunning spots is waiting with a fraction of the crowds.
Tenaya Lake sits at 8,150 feet along Tioga Road in Yosemite’s high country, surrounded by smooth granite domes and alpine forest. The water is cold and impossibly clear, and the beaches are made of sand and polished granite slabs that feel more like the Sierra backcountry than a national park picnic area.
The lake is accessible by car once Tioga Road opens for the season, which typically happens sometime between late May and mid-June depending on snowpack. In a low snow year like 2026, it could open on the earlier side, but the National Park Service has not announced a date yet.

Once you are there, the options are straightforward. Swim if you can handle the cold. Kayak or paddleboard if you brought your own gear. Hike the trails that branch out from the shoreline toward Clouds Rest and other high country destinations. Or just sit on the granite and take it in.
There is a small parking area at the lake, and it fills up on summer weekends, so arriving early is a good idea. There are no services at Tenaya Lake itself, so bring everything you need.
If you have done the valley and want to see a completely different side of Yosemite, this is where you go.
