Watch This Incredible 30-Year-Old Video Of A Fly Fishing Legend Rippin’ Lips On The Upper Sac

The Ted Fay Fly Shop in Dunsmuir has been known to produce some of the best anglers our area has seen. From Ted Fay himself to his partner, Joe Kimsey, they basically wrote the book on modern-day fly fishing on the Upper Sacramento River.

We found this incredible video of Joe Kimsey in action on the Upper Sac in 1987. Kimsey passed away in 2011 but his tips and techniques still hold up today. “Got em’ right in the snot locker!”

Here is the history of the Ted Fay Fly Shop and Joe Kimsey from www.tedfay.com –

Ted Fay moved to Dunsmuir in 1950 and bought the Lookout Point Motel. He came here for the fishing. Becoming adept at the local techniques, he would often take his motel guests fishing. This was the genesis of the Ted Fay Fly Shop and Guide Service.

In the 1960s, The Lookout Point property was claimed by eminent domain for the construction of Interstate 5. Ted moved the shop to his home in north Dunsmuir, where it remained until his passing in the early 1980s.

Joe Kimsey was born in McCloud and raised in Dunsmuir. He would spend 20 years (and a few extra minutes) in the Air Force, retiring in 1973. An avid hunter and angler, Joe began guiding when he came home. As Ted’s reputation and business grew, Joe often took overflow business, and their association grew. When Ted passed away, Joe bought the shop and moved it to the Garden Motel (now called the Acorn Inn).

Joe’s reputation for knowledge, simplicity, and kindness was widespread. I bought the shop in 1997, and Joe remained associated with the store until his passing in 2011. He is missed.

Ted Fay Fly Shop moved to its current location in 2007.
