Shasta-Trinity National Forest Implements Fire Restrictions Amid Heightened Fire Activity

Due to intense heat and dry conditions leading to increased fire activity, the Shasta-Trinity National Forest has implemented fire restrictions in Moderate and High Fire Hazard Areas, effective July 12, 2024. These measures aim to mitigate the risk of wildfires during the ongoing extreme weather conditions.
Prohibited Activities under the New Restrictions:
- Building, Maintaining, Attending, or Using Fires:
- Fires are only permitted within specific Developed Recreation Sites and Designated Fire Safe Sites.
- Fires are allowed within 10 feet of Shasta Lake, Trinity Lake, or Iron Canyon Reservoir, provided they are at least 50 feet from any vegetation.
- Smoking:
- Smoking is restricted to enclosed vehicles or buildings, designated open Developed Recreation Sites, or areas that are at least three feet in diameter and cleared of all flammable material.
- Welding and Torches:
- The use of welding, acetylene, or other torches with open flames is prohibited.
- Operating Internal Combustion Engines:
- The use of internal combustion engines off National Forest System roads and trails is banned, with the exception of boats on water surfaces.
These restrictions will remain in effect through December 31, 2024. Here is a complete map:

The decision to implement these fire restrictions stems from rapidly increasing fire behavior indices, such as burning index and decreasing fuel moisture levels. Factors considered include weather patterns, fuel conditions, potential for large fire behavior, and the availability of fire suppression resources across the region.
