10 Feet of Forecasted Snow Will Likely Close Lassen Volcanic Highway for Winter Season

Northern California is currently experiencing extraordinary snowfall, with Lower Lassen Peak (8,250′) forecasted to receive over 120 inches—or 10 feet—of snow in the next six days. This barrage of storms is part of a powerful weather system pounding the state, and it’s likely to mark the seasonal closure of Lassen Volcanic National Park Highway.
The area around Lassen Peak is no stranger to heavy snowfall. Lake Helen, located within Lassen Volcanic National Park, is considered the snowiest place in California, receiving an average of 600 to 700 inches of snow annually.
The upcoming storms are expected to bring whiteout conditions, making snow removal operations increasingly difficult. With snow levels already high and more on the way, the National Park Service will likely declare the highway’s seasonal closure to ensure public safety.
If you’re planning a visit, be prepared for road closures and winter conditions. Check Lassen Volcanic National Park’s website for the latest updates.
