Wildfire Prevention Work Near Truckee Could Temporarily Close Trails and Roads This Summer

If you hike, camp or ride near Truckee, expect some temporary closures in the Tahoe National Forest this summer.

The Middle Truckee River Watershed Forest Partnership announced that wildfire risk reduction work will be underway across several project areas from late spring through fall, and some Forest Service roads, trails and dispersed camping spots will be closed to the public during active operations.

The work involves heavy equipment, tree felling, mastication and fuel piling as part of an effort to thin overgrown vegetation and reduce the kind of dense forest conditions that drive catastrophic wildfire. The partnership, formed in 2022, includes the National Forest Foundation, The Nature Conservancy, Truckee Meadows Water Authority, Truckee River Watershed Council and the Tahoe National Forest. It operates under a 10-year plan to treat 60,000 acres in the Middle Truckee River Watershed.

Several projects are on the schedule for 2026:

  • Cabin Creek Project: 1,900 acres south of Truckee along Highway 89 South.
  • Alder 89 WUI Project: 2,500 acres north of Truckee along Highway 89, with closures affecting trailheads at Hobart, Donner Camp, Prosser Hill and Alder Creek.
  • Boca Stewardship Project: 1,350 acres between Boca and Prosser reservoirs, where dispersed camping will be restricted.
  • Woodchopper Project: 850 acres between Highway 89 and Boca Reservoir.

Portions of the Commemorative Overland Emigrant Trail will be closed during several of these operations.
