A Stargazer’s Guide to 2025: Northern California’s Must-See Astronomy Events

2025 is set to be a banner year for celestial wonders, and Northern California’s vast dark skies make it one of the best places to experience these cosmic events.
From total lunar eclipses to stunning meteor showers, here’s a month-by-month guide to the year’s astronomical highlights:
January 16: Mars Opposition
Mars reaches its closest point to Earth this year, glowing bright red all night long. Prime viewing spots include Lassen Volcanic National Park or the wide-open skies near Mount Shasta.
March 13-14: Total Lunar Eclipse
For the first time since 2022, the moon will turn a striking red as it passes through Earth’s shadow. Visible across Northern California, this event will shine brightest in areas far from city lights, like the Sierra Nevada or Shasta County.
April 21-22: Lyrid Meteor Shower
Up to 20 meteors per hour will streak across the night sky during the Lyrid Meteor Shower. Remote locations like the Lost Coast or Tahoe National Forest offer optimal stargazing opportunities.
August 12-13: Perseid Meteor Shower
The Perseids, known as one of the best meteor showers of the year, will light up Northern California skies. While a bright moon will reduce visibility, darker locations like Lava Beds National Monument can still offer great views.
September 21: Saturn Opposition
Saturn will shine at its brightest, offering the perfect opportunity to view its iconic rings. A telescope set up in a dark-sky area like the Mendocino National Forest will make this a night to remember.
December 13-14: Geminid Meteor Shower
As the year wraps up, the Geminids will peak on a moonless night, with up to 120 meteors visible per hour. Stargaze from Lassen National Forest or Point Reyes for a dazzling cosmic display.
Pack your telescope, escape the city lights, and witness the wonders of the universe unfold throughout 2025!
