AT&T Lead Cables Successfully Removed from Lake Tahoe

Efforts to preserve the pristine waters of Lake Tahoe reached a significant milestone as the League to Save Lake Tahoe announced the completion of the removal of lead-sheathed telecommunication cables from beneath the lake’s surface.
The successful project marks the culmination of a multi-year initiative aimed at protecting one of America’s most treasured natural resources.
The League collaborated with AT&T, whose specialty marine contractor, J.F. Brennan Company, handled the environmentally sensitive removal. The operation was conducted under strict safeguards to ensure water quality, aquatic life, and Tahoe’s natural surroundings remained undisturbed. The cables, identified by the environmental group Below the Blue, have been transported out of the Tahoe Basin to be recycled.
“This is a major milestone for Lake Tahoe,” said Jesse Patterson, Chief Strategy Officer of the League to Save Lake Tahoe. “We are grateful that AT&T did the right thing for the Lake Tahoe environment and honored that the League could play an instrumental role to Keep Tahoe Blue for all.”
The Tahoe Keys Marina played a pivotal role as the staging area for the removal operation, ensuring smooth coordination among various stakeholders. The project involved divers, biologists, and archaeologists who contributed their expertise to minimize environmental impact.
