Bidwell Mansion Fire Determined to Be Arson

California State Parks confirmed on Tuesday that the fire which severely damaged the historic Bidwell Mansion in Chico last week was the result of arson.

“This was an intentional act, and we can rule out any accidental fire here,” said State Parks District Chief Aaron Wright during a press conference. Wright emphasized that investigators are working closely with Cal Fire, Chico Police, and other agencies to identify those responsible.

While Wright refrained from providing specific details to avoid compromising the investigation, he noted that officials are reviewing evidence, including nearby surveillance footage, and will expand efforts as the week progresses.

“We want to share more information,” Wright said. “But I don’t want to say something that’s going to cause any delays or contradict the investigation.”

No updates were given regarding a suspect, the fire’s origin, or whether the remains of the mansion can be salvaged. Wright urged the public to avoid the site due to safety concerns.

“Currently, it’s not in a safe condition, so we really urge the public to stay out of the area,” he said.

State Parks and Cal Fire have set up a designated reporting page for those with information about the fire. Reports can be submitted at this link.

The Bidwell Mansion, built in 1868, is a vital part of Chico’s history, and the fire marks a devastating loss for the community. Investigators remain committed to finding answers and holding those responsible accountable.
