Chain Controls in Effect on I-80 Over Donner Summit

Chain controls are now in effect on Interstate 80 over Donner Summit as a powerful Christmas-week storm continues to pound the Sierra Nevada with heavy snow and strong winds.

According to California Highway Patrol Truckee, chain controls were implemented early Wednesday morning as conditions deteriorated overnight. As of 5:05 a.m. on Dec. 24, westbound I-80 is under R-2 restrictions from the Donner Lake Interchange to Rainbow, while eastbound traffic is restricted from Kingvale to Truckee. Under R-2 controls, chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles except four-wheel-drive vehicles with snow tires. Trucks are under minimum chain restrictions.

The restrictions come as a major winter storm—fueled by atmospheric rivers and cold air—continues to deliver heavy snowfall to the Sierra. Forecasters have warned that this system could bring feet of snow at higher elevations, whiteout conditions, and extremely hazardous travel during one of the busiest travel weeks of the year.

Officials urge drivers to slow down, allow extra travel time, and carry chains even if driving a four-wheel-drive vehicle. Travelers are also encouraged to check real-time road conditions before heading out.

For the latest updates, drivers should monitor the Caltrans QuickMap and be prepared for additional restrictions or temporary closures as the storm continues to impact the region.
