Chico’s Historic Bidwell Mansion Destroyed in Late-Night Fire

A devastating fire broke out early Wednesday morning at Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park in Chico, severely damaging the iconic landmark. Chico Fire Department responded to the blaze, which started around 3 a.m., and successfully contained the fire to the mansion itself, sparing surrounding buildings.
California State Parks is working with CAL FIRE’s Office of the State Fire Marshal, Chico Fire Department, Chico Police Department, and California State University, Chico to investigate the incident. The park is currently closed, and the site has been secured as officials assess the damage.

“This is a devastating loss for California State Parks, the Chico community, and all who cherish the history embodied by the Bidwell Mansion,” said Armando Quintero, Director of California State Parks. “Our immense gratitude goes to the Chico Fire Department and all allied agencies for their swift response. This loss is deeply personal to the State Parks team and the community, but we are committed to preserving California’s history and moving forward together.”
Completed in 1868, the 26-room mansion served as the home of John and Annie Bidwell, prominent figures in the history of Chico and California. The mansion was undergoing extensive renovations, and some original artifacts had been removed prior to the fire, though others remained inside.

State Parks will inventory the surviving artifacts once it is safe to enter the structure. Plans for the future of Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park are currently undecided.
The Bidwell Mansion has been a symbol of Chico’s heritage for over a century, and its loss is a significant blow to the community. Anyone with information about the fire or who may have found related items is encouraged to contact the Northern Buttes District Office at 530-538-2200.
