Dark Sky Festival Returns to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks

Sequoia Parks Conservancy recently announced the return of the Dark Sky Festival, running from September 6-8, 2024. This year’s theme, “Discover the Dark,” offers a unique opportunity for stargazers and nature enthusiasts to explore the wonders of the night sky while learning about the importance of preserving natural darkness.

The festival kicks off on September 6th with a special community event in Visalia, CA—a movie night at the historic Visalia FOX Theater featuring “A Million Miles Away.” This inspiring biopic tells the story of Central Valley native José M. Hernández, a former farm worker who became a NASA engineer and astronaut, embodying the festival’s spirit of perseverance and community.

Throughout the weekend, attendees can enjoy free activities, a silent auction, and themed ranger-led programs across Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. The event will feature a keynote presentation by Rebecca Boyle, a noted science journalist whose work has appeared in major publications like The New York Times and National Geographic.

Saturday night will conclude with star parties at Wuksachi Lodge and Big Stump Picnic Area, where visitors can observe the night sky through telescopes and learn from local astronomers and park rangers.

Festival merchandise featuring artwork by Los Angeles-based illustrator Eric Tan will be available online and at park stores. Visitors are encouraged to book accommodations early and check current air quality due to the Coffee Pot Fire by visiting AirNow and InciWeb.
