Driver Ignores Tahoe Road Closure, Ends Up Stuck in Emerald Bay

A commercial driver learned the hard way this week that road closures in Lake Tahoe aren’t just suggestions.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) South Lake Tahoe unit, the driver disregarded a clearly marked “Road Closed” sign and attempted to navigate the snow-covered switchbacks of SR-89 in Emerald Bay—a stretch of road notorious for its stunning views and treacherous winter conditions.
The ill-advised detour didn’t last long. The vehicle quickly became stuck in the tight, icy turns, requiring a heavy-duty tow to remove it. Along with the hefty towing bill, the driver was cited for ignoring the road closure.
“Driving around a Road Closed sign is extremely dangerous, not to mention illegal,” CHP warned in a social media post.
Emerald Bay is a favorite winter destination for skiers and outdoor adventurers, but SR-89 frequently closes during storms due to hazardous conditions. CHP urges drivers to respect closures to avoid fines, vehicle damage, and potentially life-threatening situations.
In Tahoe’s winter wonderland, nature always wins—so don’t test it.
