Fisherman Catches MONSTER 47-Pound Chinook on the Smith River
Retired fishing guide Hank Mautz, along with local guide Shad Hopper, recently reeled in a massive 47-pound Chinook salmon on Northern California’s Smith River.
The catch, an impressive feat even for seasoned anglers, showcases the allure of one of the last rivers in California where it’s still legal to fish for Chinook.
Here’s a look at the monster fish:
While many California rivers have implemented bans on Chinook salmon fishing due to declining populations and environmental concerns, the Smith River remains one of the few places where anglers can still legally catch these legendary fish. Known for its pristine, undammed waters, the Smith River provides a unique habitat that supports some of the healthiest salmon runs in the state.
This rare exception allows anglers to continue pursuing the thrill of catching Chinook, a species known for its strength and size.
