Flooding Along South Yuba River Triggers Rescue and Evacuation Warning Near Donner Summit

Emergency crews responded to flooding along the South Yuba River on Donner Summit as heavy rain continued to swell waterways across the Sierra.

According to the Truckee Fire Protection District, crews assisted residents at a home along the South Yuba River who became temporarily trapped when rising water cut off their ability to leave. Firefighters were joined by Cal Fire, Olympic Valley Fire, the California Highway Patrol, and California State Parks. No injuries were reported.

Not far away, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office issued an evacuation warning for the Cisco Grove area near Hampshire Rocks Road, between Donner Pass Road and Cisco Road, as water levels on the South Yuba River continued to rise. One home with nine occupants was evacuated safely Tuesday afternoon, while all other nearby residences remain under an evacuation warning.

Officials warn that additional flooding could occur with little notice as several more days of rain and wind are forecast. Residents in the area are urged to gather essential items, monitor official alerts, and be ready to move to higher ground if conditions worsen.

Placer County has pre-positioned emergency resources, including snowcats, snowmobiles, and dive teams, to respond quickly if needed. Sandbags are also available at multiple locations throughout the county for residents in flood-prone areas.

Authorities continue to stress the dangers of fast-moving water and urge the public to avoid driving or wading through flooded roads and waterways as storms persist.
