A 33-Year Wildflower Tradition Is Returning to Northern California for Mother’s Day Weekend

A beloved North State tradition is returning to Yreka next month, and this year it comes with a birdwatching walk to kick off the weekend.
The 33rd Annual Siskiyou County Mother’s Day Wildflower Show takes place Sunday, May 10 at the Yreka Community Center, 810 N. Oregon Street. Hosted by the Klamath and Shasta-Trinity National Forests in partnership with the Shasta Chapter of the California Native Plant Society, the free event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Attendees can browse a display of native wildflowers, shop native plants for sale, and take in botanical artwork by illustrator Paula Fong. Members of the Shasta Chapter California Native Plant Society will be available throughout the day to answer questions.

A wildflower photo contest adds another layer to this year’s event. Submissions of up to three native wildflower photos are due by April 27 and can be sent to jennifer.iaccarino@usda.gov. Photos can be color, black and white, closeup, or landscape. Public voting opens online at shasta-cnps.org/photo-contest from May 3 through May 8, with live native plants awarded to the top three finishers.
The day before the wildflower show, the Klamath National Forest is hosting a guided birdwatching walk at Greenhorn Park in Yreka in celebration of Migratory Bird Day. The outing begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, with participants meeting at the upper parking lot. Local bird experts will lead the walk through the park’s varied habitats. Binoculars, spotting scopes, and field guides are encouraged.
Both events are free and open to the public.
