Forest Service Prepares for 1,065-Acre Prescribed Burn on Shasta Lake

The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) has announced plans to conduct the Northwoods Prescribed Burn in the Shasta Lake National Recreation Area of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest during the week of Sunday, December 8, through Saturday, December 14.

Favorable weather conditions have been forecasted, and the project is expected to cover 1,065 acres with planned ignitions lasting up to three days.

The prescribed burn will take place near Shasta Lake, above the Shasta Marina at Packer’s Bay boat launch. Smoke from the burn will likely be visible from various locations, including the western portions of Shasta Lake, Interstate-5 near the Pit River Bridge, Centimudi boat ramp, Shasta Dam, Shasta Lake City, and the west side of Redding.

The USFS is advising the public to be mindful of smoke impacts near the Packers Bay area and to avoid using the Waterman’s Gulch and Fisherman’s Loop trail systems during the burn.

The project aims to reduce fire hazards, improve forest health, and enhance the habitat for wildlife species while maintaining the scenic quality of this popular recreation area. It also supports cost-effective fuel management strategies to protect nearby homeowners and recreationists.
