Heading to the Outdoors for the Fourth of July? Leave the Fireworks at Home.

As Northern Californians make plans to celebrate Independence Day outdoors, the U.S. Forest Service is reminding visitors that fireworks and pyrotechnics are strictly prohibited on all public lands—including national forests and campsites—every day of the year.

The Shasta-Trinity National Forest is bracing for a surge of holiday visitors, with officials expecting record turnout over the long weekend. With nearly 90% of wildfires nationwide caused by human activity, officials are urging everyone to play it safe and leave the fireworks to the professionals.

Before heading out, visitors should check the Shasta-Trinity National Forest website for trail and site alerts. Some areas may still be inaccessible due to lingering snowpack or flood damage, so having a backup plan is a smart move.

Water safety is another big concern this year, as runoff from melting snow in higher elevations has created fast, cold rivers and streams. The Forest Service urges people to stay out of rapid water and call 911 immediately if a rescue is needed.

To help prevent wildfires, all visitors should follow fire restrictions, carry tools to extinguish campfires, and report any signs of fire to 911.

Let’s keep the holiday safe—for people and for the forest.
