Historic Fire Lookout Gets a Fresh Upgrade, Offering a Unique Stay in Tahoe National Forest

The historic Calpine Fire Lookout in Tahoe National Forest is looking better than ever, thanks to recent renovations that have rejuvenated its appearance while preserving its historical charm. The beloved lookout, which is one of two historic fire lookouts available for reservation in the Tahoe National Forest, now boasts a new foundation and a fresh coat of paint.

Last year, funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law allowed the forest service to replace the lookout’s old dirt foundation with a sturdy cement base. This season, the timber program stepped in to give the lookout and its picnic tables a fresh layer of paint, helping to maintain its iconic appearance.

Although no longer used for spotting wildfires, the Calpine Fire Lookout remains a popular destination for those seeking a unique outdoor experience. Visitors can drive, hike, ski, bike, or even ride over-snow vehicles to the lookout, where they can enjoy breathtaking views and the rare opportunity to sleep in the upper level of the historic structure.

For those interested in reserving a night at the Calpine Fire Lookout, bookings can be made through recreation.gov. To inquire about the other historic lookout in the area, Sardine Peak Lookout, you can call (530) 994-3401.
