Holiday Magic Train Debuts at Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad

For the first time, the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad is running a Holiday Magic Train, a nighttime, steam-powered ride through the Sierra National Forest that blends festive cheer with living history.
The hour-long experience follows the same four-mile round-trip route used more than a century ago, when the railroad operated as part of a major logging operation that ran through 1931. Riders travel behind an authentic logging locomotive, moving through towering pines before stopping midway for lights, snowfall effects, and holiday fun.

This season, the train is fully decked out with Christmas lights and music, and riders are treated to complimentary hot cocoa to keep warm on chilly mountain nights. Families from across the Central Valley have been making the trip, many returning for repeat rides after experiencing the festive atmosphere firsthand.
Along the way, conductors share stories of the railroad’s past, offering a glimpse into how trains shaped life in the Sierra during the 1800s and early 1900s. The experience combines education with holiday charm, creating something that feels both nostalgic and storybook-like.

About 50 people help keep the operation running, preserving local history while welcoming thousands of visitors. With more than 6,000 riders already this season, the Holiday Magic Train is quickly becoming a Central Valley holiday tradition.
The Holiday Magic Train runs through January 4 with multiple departures each night, weather permitting. Dogs are welcome, and visitors can also explore the on-site museum, gift shop, and toy store. For tickets and details, visit the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad website.
