Hotshot Firefighter Seriously Injured by Falling Tree While Fighting the Lone Pine Fire

During the night shift on August 16th, 2023, hotshot firefighter Diego Rivera was seriously injured by a falling tree while battling the Lone Pine Fire in the Six Rivers National Forest. The incident occurred as the Hotshot Crew was engaged in direct handline construction to contain a spot fire.

In response to the tree strike, the crew immediately activated emergency notification protocols and administered initial medical treatment. Rivera was swiftly transported by ground ambulance to a waiting medevac helicopter, which airlifted them to a trauma center for urgent evaluation and treatment. As of the current update, the firefighter has undergone two successful surgeries and is currently being cared for in the intensive care unit.

“The injuries sustained will require an extensive recovery phase,” read his GoFundMe. “Please keep Diego in your thoughts and prayers during these tough days and months to come.”

The Six Rivers National Forest is in constant collaboration with the Angeles National Forest, which is the home unit of the injured firefighter, to ensure comprehensive support for both the firefighter and their family, as well as the entire Hotshot Crew.
