I-80 Westbound Reopens With Chain Controls as More Snow Targets Donner Pass

It may look like a postcard morning over Donner Summit, but winter driving conditions are still very real.
According to California Highway Patrol Truckee, Interstate 80 westbound has reopened to passenger vehicles under R-2 chain controls as of 7:52 a.m. Wednesday. That means chains are required for most vehicles except those with four-wheel or all-wheel drive and snow tires.
Eastbound I-80, however, remains closed at this time.
While the skies above the Sierra are clear, officials warn that the roadway is still icy, slick, and cold. Drivers heading over the summit should expect winter conditions despite the sunshine.
And don’t get too comfortable. More snowfall is forecasted later today, which could quickly change conditions and lead to additional restrictions or closures.
The message from CHP is simple: winter isn’t finished yet. If you’re traveling over the pass, carry chains, reduce your speed, and give yourself extra space.
