Large Rockslide Falls on Highway 50 Over Echo Summit

The storms over Northern California are beginning to cause problems for travelers throughout the region. Near South Lake Tahoe, a large rockslide closed U.S. 50 over Echo Summit.

The slide closed the highway overnight, but CalTrans worked hard to clean up rocks and reopen the roadway. But if you’re traveling there today, you should expect delays.

The California Highway Patrol posted a photo of the slide on social media:

“Last night, boulders from Echo Summit spilled onto Hwy 50 causing the highway to be closed for approximately 3 hours,” wrote CHP on Instragem. “Caltrans did the best they could during the hours of darkness and got the road open but there will be additional clean-up today.”

While the rain and snow continues to pummel the region, expect more travel delays in high-elevation areas.
