Lassen National Forest Offering Free Guided Snowshoe Tours in February

The Almanor Ranger District is inviting outdoor enthusiasts to explore the breathtaking beauty of Lassen National Forest on snowshoes. These guided snowshoe hikes are set to kick off on February 2, 2024, offering a unique opportunity to embrace the magic of the winter season.

Currently, two programs are on the schedule, with more to follow as conditions allow. While the tours typically take place in the surrounding Lassen National Forest, the exact locations may vary based on the current snow conditions. These snowshoe hikes are designed with beginners in mind but can become quite challenging depending on the terrain and snow conditions.

Here’s the current 2024 Winter Snowshoe Tour Schedule:

Morgan Summit Snowmobile Area: This scenic spot is located on Meadow Lane, just off HWY 36, approximately 23 miles NW of Chester, CA. It’s also a mere 0.3 mile from the HWY 89 turnoff leading to Lassen Volcanic National Park.

  • Friday, February 2, 2024, 9:30 A.M.
  • Friday, February 9, 2024, 9:30 A.M.

For added convenience, participants can meet Forest Service personnel at the Almanor Ranger District Front Office by 9:00 A.M. on the day of the hike.

To ensure an enjoyable and educational experience, these tours are available by reservation only, and spots are limited. Participants should be at least eight years old, and minors must be accompanied by an adult. The one to two-hour program covers various engaging topics, including fundamental winter survival skills, environmental education, and local history.

Don’t worry if you don’t have your own snowshoes; rentals are available free of charge while supplies last. If you plan to borrow snowshoes, please specify when making your reservation. Cross-country skiers are also welcome, but they’ll need to bring their own equipment.

Group reservations for schools and other organizations may be available, so don’t hesitate to reach out to the Almanor Ranger District during regular business hours for more information.

Get ready to immerse yourself in the winter wonderland of Lassen National Forest and make unforgettable memories.
