Lassen Park Highway Fully Reopens for the First Time Since Park Fire Closure

Lassen Volcanic National Park has fully reopened Highway 89 for the first time since the devastating Park Fire came into the area and closed the road. Recent snowfall, which blanketed the park over the weekend, brought newfound confidence for officials that the park is safe for visitors.

This reopening is a significant milestone in the park’s recovery, allowing visitors to once again travel the full length of the highway, from Sulphur Works to the Devastated Area. Park officials urge visitors to exercise caution as some areas may still be affected by snow, with roads and trails potentially wet and slippery. While much of the snow has been cleared, winter conditions persist in certain parts of the park.

The reopening of Highway 89 is a key part of Lassen’s phased recovery plan, with ongoing efforts to restore areas damaged by the fire. Although the road is open, visitors should be aware that certain sections of the park remain under rehabilitation, and some facilities may still have limited services. Also, high-elevation areas are currently covered in snow.

For those planning a visit, the Loomis Museum and Manzanita Lake Camper Store have resumed operations, offering essential amenities to park-goers. However, restrictions on campfires and charcoal grills remain in place, though cooking devices with shut-off valves are permitted.
