Lassen Park Highway May Be Closed for the Winter Season as Snow Moves In

As of November 13, 2024, the Lassen National Park Highway (Hwy 89) is currently closed between the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center at the park’s southwest entrance and Loomis Plaza near Manzanita Lake at the northwest entrance. With more snow in the forecast, this temporary closure may soon become the official winter shutdown.

Each winter, heavy snowfall leads to the seasonal closure of Hwy 89 through Lassen Volcanic National Park. This annual closure ensures safety and preserves resources while allowing snow enthusiasts to enjoy the park’s winter landscape. Once closed, the highway typically remains inaccessible until late spring when conditions allow for safe reopening.

Visitors planning to explore Lassen during the winter should prepare for limited access to certain areas. Snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and other winter activities are still available, with entry points accessible near the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center. Park officials encourage visitors to check current conditions before visiting.
