Lassen Volcanic National Park Partially Reopens as Park Fire Containment Progresses

As firefighting efforts continue to stabilize the Park Fire’s northeastern edge, Lassen Volcanic National Park has reopened its northern entrance, allowing visitors to once again explore parts of this Northern California treasure.

As of Saturday morning, traffic is being permitted through Highway 89 at Manzanita Lake, with access extending south to the parking lot at Devastated Area. From there, the highway is open only to bicycles and pedestrians up to Summit Lake. Due to ongoing evacuation orders, the stretch from Summit Lake to the park’s southwestern boundary remains closed to all traffic.

Several outlying areas of the park, including Butte Lake, Juniper Lake, and Warner Valley, will stay closed until further notice.

Visitors should be aware that services are limited as park staff work to restore normal operations. The Manzanita Lake Camper Store is open for retail, food, laundry, and showers, with gasoline availability forthcoming. The Loomis Museum is open for visitor information from Saturday through Tuesday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. However, the reopening of the Manzanita Lake Cabins is still undetermined.

Manzanita Lake Campground is set to reopen to reservations beginning Monday, August 26, with strict fire restrictions in place. Summit Lake Campground and backcountry camping remain closed.

Open hiking trails include Manzanita Lake, Nobles Emigrant, Chaos Crags, and Echo Lake/Twin Lakes. Popular trails like Bumpass Hell, Lassen Peak, and Mill Creek Falls remain closed due to fire-related concerns.

The Park Fire, which has consumed over 425,000 acres across multiple counties, remains a significant concern, especially on the park’s southern side. Although the fire has not entered the park, visitors should be prepared for lingering smoke and potentially affected air quality.
