Lost Splitboarder Rescued in the Dark of Night Near Lake Tahoe

Tahoe Search and Rescue came to the aid of a lost split boarder on Sunday, December 29, near the junction of the Warr Trail and Saxon Creek Trail.

The boarder and a friend had ventured up from Highway 89 for a downhill ride as darkness began to set in. The situation took a turn when the friend decided to leave, abandoning the lost man several miles from any trailhead, with no light and little familiarity with the area, according to a Tahoe Search and Rescue Facebook post.

At approximately 5 p.m., the lost boarder called 911 for help. A rescue team of two set out from Christmas Valley at 7:30 p.m., using the Warr Trail to reach the stranded individual. Meanwhile, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office rescue helicopter, Echo 1, confirmed his location during a flyover.

The rescue team arrived at the man’s location around 10 p.m., providing much-needed hot chocolate, water, a headlamp, and warm layers. They then guided him safely back to Christmas Valley. The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office transported the man to his hotel, completing the rescue effort after midnight.
