Matsutake Mushroom Harvest Season Opens in Shasta-Trinity National Forest

The 2024 harvest season for Matsutake mushrooms has officially opened in the Shasta McCloud Management Unit of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest.

Running from September 17 through November 30, this annual event draws mushroom enthusiasts and commercial harvesters alike to the forest’s lush lands. However, those intending to participate must follow strict guidelines to protect the forest and its valuable resources.

A commercial harvest permit is required to gather Matsutake mushrooms in the National Forest. These permits can be purchased at two ranger stations in the area: the McCloud Ranger Station and the Mt. Shasta Ranger Station. No personal-use permits are available during the fall Matsutake season, and those caught harvesting without a valid permit may face citations.

Permit Costs:

  • Daily rate: $5 per day/lb., with a four-day, 20 lb. minimum for $20.
  • 30-day permit: $100, allowing up to 100 lbs.
  • Season permit: $200, allowing up to 200 lbs.

All harvest days must be consecutive, and permits from other forests are not valid in the Shasta McCloud area. Permit holders must log their harvest dates and quantities, and failure to comply may result in penalties.

Permits can be purchased at the McCloud Ranger Station or the Mt. Shasta Ranger Station during operating hours. The McCloud station only accepts cash or checks, while the Mt. Shasta station accepts credit cards.

For more information, contact the ranger stations or visit the Shasta-Trinity National Forest website.
