Missing Teen Hiker Found Safe in Plumas County

A missing 16-year-old hiker, Camila “Mila” Schweyer, was found alive on Monday after failing to return from a hike in the Lakes Basin Recreation Area of Plumas County. Schweyer had been missing since Sunday evening after her mother dropped her off near Elwell Lakes Lodge for a day hike with her chihuahua.

Plumas County sheriff’s deputies received the report of the missing girl around 6 p.m. on Sunday, prompting a search that lasted into Monday. Search-and-rescue teams combed the area, while a California Highway Patrol helicopter from Redding provided aerial support.

Schweyer was successfully rescued around 4:30 p.m. Monday, and authorities offered her medical treatment. The details of her condition have not been released, but she is reported to be safe.

The Lakes Basin Recreation Area, located about 145 miles northeast of Sacramento, is a popular outdoor destination known for its scenic lakes, hiking trails, and camping opportunities in the Plumas National Forest.
