Mountain Biker Rescued by CHP Helicopter After Getting Stranded Near Downieville

A winter ride on one of Northern California’s most iconic mountain bike routes ended with a helicopter rescue over the weekend.
According to the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a report of a mountain biker who became lost and stranded after encountering snow while riding the Butcher Ranch Trail. Winter conditions forced the rider off the established trail, leaving them unable to safely make it back on their own.
The rider was carrying satellite communication equipment and was able to call for help — a move officials say likely made the difference.
A helicopter from the California Highway Patrol, based out of Auburn Airport, responded to the call. The crew first picked up a Helicopter Rescue Technician in Nevada City before flying to the incident area.
After locating the rider, the CHP helicopter landed at the Downieville School field to prepare for hoist operations. The biker was then safely hoisted into the aircraft and flown back to Downieville.
The sheriff’s office used the incident as a reminder that winter backcountry conditions can change quickly, even on well-known trails. Anyone recreating in remote areas is urged to carry proper clothing, emergency supplies, and reliable communication gear.
